Project Showcase: Fort Massac Rest Area
Check out this exciting new Fort Massac Rest Area! As a flagship State Rest Area at the Illinois / Kentucky border, this new Rest Area offers a sleek, modern exterior and interior where natural light and contemporary design elements create an inviting and refreshing atmosphere. The innovative design references regional context, increased safety features for travelers, and an appealing and restorative stop for the public. Whether just passing through or taking a longer break, the design encourages travelers to unwind and recharge.
Key features include:
- Connection to Place: The design is centered around the concept of historical movement through the area (Spanish Explorers, French and English Military, Chickasaw and Cherokee Indians, George Rogers Clark, etc.), significant topographical features with movement including the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and the important core mission for IDOT of supporting the safe movement of vehicles through the State. The exterior roof structure and interior elements reflect this important concept. The City of Metropolis – the project location – is the hometown of the Man of Steel, Superman. The new Rest Area features a subtle homage to movement and this unique history of Metropolis. Can you spot the connection?
- Supportive Spaces: In response to the need for increased support spaces and providing areas for relaxation and rejuvenation during travels, the building plan provides space for multiple large restroom pods, dedicated Unisex /Family restrooms, prominent Security Office and storage, large lobby for seating, vending, and interpretive area, as well as staff support spaces. The interior building finishes are contemporary and inviting with the use of wood accents connecting occupants to the rural scenic characteristics of the area.
- Expansive Site Plan: Set in a scenic landscape, the site features a variety of elements intended to offer the public activities and cultural information including walking paths, adult exercise areas, interpretive gardens, pollinator gardens, picnic areas, etc. Significant increases in vehicle parking is provided including an increase in automobile parking from 20 to 45 spaces and truck parking from 17 to 63 spaces – partially shaded by mature trees existing on the site. The space is ideal for travelers seeking a safe restorative stop and moment of calm and connection with nature.
The Fort Massac Rest Area is not just a typical rest stop but truly a welcome and relaxation center for visitors. We are proud to be bringing this design to life in the coming year and thank IDOT and Illinois Capital Development Board for the opportunity!
